In Australia, the number of swimming group members and avid ocean, river, lake or pool swimmers has surged to over 3.5 million since the onset of Covid. From Albany in Western Australia to Airlie Beach, these groups, varying in size from 4 to over 600+ members, have become vibrant social communities.
These communities based around ocean, river or lake swimming, initially spurred by the closure of swimming pools during the pandemic, have blossomed across the nation. The growth is evident in Melbourne, where Dendy Beach saw its numbers rise from under 40 to over 130 members.
Members come prepared with swimming gear, waterproof buckets, backpacks, warm shoes, and thermal caps. The scenic beaches serve as picturesque venues for these groups, offering a unique experience of cold-water sea swimming. Wetsuits have become commonplace as swimmers now embrace longer distances. The trend presents a promising market for swimwear and accessories, catering to the expanding community of 3.5 million plus enthusiasts.
